Act I. The clown.
I've quit my job being a magician and clown at kids parties.
Characters conquered:
Snow White
Sleeping Beauty
Ariel the Mermaid
Strawberry Shortcake
Elmo
Barney
Dorothy the Dinosaur
Bill the Builder
the fat clown
the pink clown with converse
My favorite character: Snow White, the black hair, the golden slippers.
My favorite kid: The little boy who wanted me to paint Spider-man on his face. I was all out of red paint, so I say "You wanna be a purple spiderman?" And he says "Yeah!" He also wanted to be my assistant for the magic show. So he got to knock on the box, before I opened it to show the bunny.
Everytime I was Barney there was always the one little boy who could not help hugging me over and over again.
I will remember the bunnies.
The black bunny, the very very white bunny. The spotted bunny. The floppy-eared bunny. They were all named Treasure. That's the story I gave the kids each weekend.
My favorite party:
The party where everyone stood up in the restaurant as I came through the Princess and even the adults were aghast.
(adults seem to forget whot they are just as much as the children when they see me in character. when i was strawberry shortcake the grandmother said to me, just before i put on my costume, "I've never met Strawberry Shortcake before."
There was the little girl who followed me everywhere believing I was truly a princess, and when I leaned down to pose for a picture with another little boy she kneeled beside me as if she were my stewart and took my hand.
Close calls and other humiliations:
When my Elmo head almost fell off as I was hugging a kid.
The kids who kept pulling my tail when I was Barney.
When my Princess dress wouldn't fit.
The many birthday girls who only could cry when I showed up, too scared of clowns, or the girl who stayed under the table when I was a princess.
When the kids got into my magic before my show to reveal the bunny. So for my trick I made the rabbit dissapear.
When I forgot all my games, as Bob the builder, but I did bring a big rope which the kids had way more fun with anyway.
Ducking in bathroom stalls of parks to change in a fluster praying that the kids don't follow and see me take off my big Barney/Elmo feet/princess slippers to put my sneakers back.
Other neat times:
I was a clown at an Indian family's party. They had me take my shoes off to follow their customs. So I gladly took of my Clown shoes and went barefoor.
